Google's Chrome

Google has recently released ‘Chrome’; another browser for us web designers and developers to include in our list of web platforms to support.

So what does Chrome bring to the browser table; do we really need another browser?

  • One box for everything: Like Firefox 3’s ‘Awesome Bar’, the address bar can be used for entering both website addresses and keywords to search the internet with.
  • Thumbnails of your top sites: When you open a new tab, it will display your ‘most visited’ websites. This works very well, and makes the tasks of going back to regularly visited sites very quick and easy.
  • Out of the box Security: Chrome will warn the user before navigating to a page if it suspects the site contains malware or phishing scripts.
  • Browsing Speed: Not only does the ‘one box for everything’ bar and default start page mean you can find websites quickly, page loading times are fast.

So is it better than Internet Explorer 8, Firefox 3, Safari 3?

Well, we love Firefox. Ever since it appeared on the scene in April 2003, it changed the way users viewed the world wide web.

From a web designer and developer perspective, we have the tools and confidence to build and test complex dynamic websites through the use of ‘add-ons’. Such add-ons allows the user to personalize and enhance their browsing experience, in a way limited only by the add-on developers imagination.

This is a feature that Chrome seems to lack. Giving people the ability to create their own extensions for web applications is a modern and important way for internet technologies to build user bases and community.

Then again it is still only in BETA release, and there are many things to like about Chrome, so it is definitely one to keep an eye on.
